• Viticulture

    Attention for the environment is at its most obvious when dealing directly with the land. For this reason Masi uses:

    • rainwater, collected in tanks, to reduce water consumption to the minimum;
    • natural substances for fertilisation;
    • natural substances, such as copper and sulphur, as fungicides;
    • Agronomic practices aimed at improving the relationship between the vines and the environment, such as grassing between the rows, which helps avoid problems associated with radical asphyxiation, helps stop erosion, increases the presence of organic substances, and preserves biodiversity in the vineyard, thus increasing the number of naturally-occurring pest control organisms.

    Work is carried out in the vineyards strictly according to the rhythms of nature and to necessity in specific locations, thus avoiding waste and damage to the environment. For many years Masi has successfully used the "Quality Grapes Project" system - a close collaboration between its technical staff and its many supplier vignerons - to achieve not only production of the best quality grapes, but also to promote the culture of sustainability and respect for the environment.

  • Cellars

    Masi employs an ecological approach in the wineries where it makes and matures its fine wines. The following is a list of methods the Company employs to avoid waste and to work with greater respect for the environment:

    • the use of bamboo cane grape containers for optimum grape appassimento conditions: washable and ecofriendly when compared to alternative materials such as wood and plastic;
    • a state-of-the-art filtration system helps us to avoid the use of additives and inert substances;
    • automatic light-switch sensors help us avoid energy loss, together with automatic thermostats that are situated in contact with the wine and switch on only when temperature changes would have a quality effect on the wines themselves;
    • an efficient water treatment system means that waste water can be re-used.

    Out of respect for our faithful clientele, we do not use any animal by-products or allergy causing products in the production of our wines.

  • Packaging

    Attention to the environmental impact of materials used for packaging has always been a priority for Masi Agricola, and involves the following projects and activities:

    • Project Rafcycle, for the recycling and transformation of the silicone backing for labels into cellulose;
    • use of materials made from certified wood for packaging, obtained from sustainably managed forests with rigorous environmental, social and economic standards;
    • reduction of the surface area of cardboard used to interleave the bottles inside cases through changes in design;
    • introduction of lighter bottles for appropriate products in appropriate markets;
    • elimination of stickers on packaging by printing content details directly onto such packaging.
  • Production plant

    Masi production plant is designed to make the best quality wines with complete respect for the environment. The production facility is run according to declared environmental norms and Environmental Management standard ISO 14001, as certified by SQS. At Masi, we know that we need to be as careful as possible with our consumption of electric power and we need to put recycling into practice at all our plants:

    • 15% of energy needs come from solar panels;
    • part of the energy we buy comes from renewable sources;
    • water heating systems both for personal and for industrial use are powered by solar energy and methane gas. Gas consumption has been progressively reduced with the adoption of more efficient new technology at the various plants and through less wastage;
    • our production plants collect waste divided into glass, plastic, cardboard, wood and cork categories, ready for recycling;
    • recycling is also put into practice in our offices, and all our staff are aware of its need.
  • The environment

    Attention for "the environment" at Masi has a wider significance than normal and is extended to the workplaces of all our staff, guaranteeing that they can carry out their functions in safe and secure locations, not only in the sense that they respect legal norms, but that they are also attractive and healthy places to work.

    Health and Safety at Work is managed by Masi through the OHSAS 18001 international standard.
